REPLACEMENT KNEE

Oh my Goodness... I have to have a new knee... the surgeon was very shocked about the state of the knee. Basically no lining and very roughed up bones and oh dear a complete mess in there. the words "never seen anything like it in someone your age- or anyone actually" were his words and my lip wobbled....

Trouble is the right knee isnt far behind and I suspect the MRI request has got lost in the system for that. (so the surgeon is going to ask both are done on the same day-roll out the tamazopam then!)

I am going to have a MRI on the left one too because although the surgeon was shocked at the level of disease particularly in a person of my age- the reality of having major surgery and having revision in so many yrs isnt that pretty.

I have NO cruxiate ligaments and there is no sign they were ever there! but of course they were...

I will need 2 knees done in all likelihood- in close succession

So- onto the surgery shopping list:

A is for ankles are wonky and feet need some work
B is for Bum- erm my left hip isnt right either and hurts in my bum cheek
C cruciate ligaments (as above)
D deviation of hand joints
E elbows- wont straighten- right more bent than left but not too bad on the pain so will leave for now
F Feet- did I already say that they are on the side and LUMPY!
G Good grief I am a moaning mini...
H ave you died of boredom yet
I am a self pitying person tonight!
J ust wait til Jean tells you what I did in Haskins with my friend, some posh testers and some cashmere jumpers.
Keep to the point jen, serious post- Ahem.
Lest not forget that there are lots of people worse, far worse off than me.
Me- I have a great life- lovely children, good hubby and family and a cat
Now- wasnt I supposed to be on about something important
Ooo yes. surgery
P ooped a lot of the time still
Questions over surgery
Resting splints look much nicer arranged in pots with sweet peas growing up in them
S 2 shoulders- lean forwards and one boob arrives at the corner before the other!
T rying to be positive but think total body replacement sounds a good idea
Up with the boobs... perhaps we need a new bra range for ladies who erm LEAN
Very much worse on right on top half, and worse on the left on the bottom...
Why am I waffling on still oooh and my wrists
X-rays (more of them to come)
ZZZZZZzzzzzzzz what you will all be doing if you have got this far
t the inability to straighten knees and stand is causing huge issues.

The surgeon showed me the pictures from in the knee. Its supposed to be looking clean like 2 pingpong balls and clear fluid. My knee looks like tomato spaghetti and shredded tissue paper.

I am on the list

Oh Jenni,
I'm so sorry you are having to face the prospect of major surgery but I expect you knew it was coming from what happened with your recent knee operation.

I have also had very similar words spoken to me on several occasions (I had my first replacement at age 33 just 7 years after my RA diagnosis) so I know how devestating it is to hear that you have such severe destruction and have to face the likelihood of multiple surgeries due to the severity of your disease and your age.

When you think about it you have done well to have lasted this long without replacement surgery after having severe RA for so long, although I know that will be of little comfort to you, at least it shows that the drugs you have taken in the past have helped to an extent.

I know you will be worried about the future need for revision surgery (having the first surgery so young, this is natural) but the materials they use now have greatly improved. I was told that some replacements now last well over 30 years, so hopefully any revision you MIGHT need would be a long time into the future...and who knows what advances may have been made by then.

Your quality of life will be greatly improved after the replacement as you will be rid of that horrible pain and will be more mobile.

You will get through this Jenni. You are always so positive but its ok (and perfectly understandable) to be scared and fed up with this bloody disease and its consequences.

Let me know if there's any questions you have that I can help with.

Thinking of you
much love

Jenni - I know you will be surprised but I really am lost for words. I can't believe that you have so many problems and yet retain a sense of humour. You are amazing. I just wish you all the luck in the world with your surgery. If my experience of friends who have had knee replacements is anything to go by, you will feel huge benefits. I hope you have as great a Christmas as you possibly can.

Love and best wishes

Jenni

My poor love. I think you knew it was coming. There is no denying it will be tough and you will have to bite that lip again. However, the up side is worth the discomfort.

As you most probably remember I had my first one in January. It has taken me twelve months to recuperate and the RA has played a significant part in delaying this. However, it was so worth it. The awful nagging pain has gone. O.k. I still walk with a limp and my knee still swells with the RA but it is a blessed relief.

I don't think about the possibility of having to have it replaced again one day. I live for today, as I am sure you do, and take on the chin whatever tomorrow may fling at me. My other knee needs doing but I am going to give myself some more time.

I see from your other posts that you are battling the odds and keeping out of hospital. Have a lovely Christmas with your family. You inspire us all.

Jackie

Hi Jenni i don't know alot about knee replacements, but do think that your positive attitude and determination will help you no end after the operation.

All the best.

Jenni I really empathise with you, I had both my knees replaced a couple of years ago, I was 38. I asked the surgeon on a scale of 1-10 how bad they looked on X-Ray, he said 10, when they opened my knees up he said they were worse than the x-ray.

However, having my knees replaced did get me out of a wheelchair. I am still in pain but at least I can move around a bit. Before that I had both hips replaced too, and had hand operations, need shoulders and elbows replaced, foot ops, the list goes on. Despite taking all these drugs for 12 years, having horrendous side effects from the drugs, the disease continues to munch through my skeleton.

I too was worried about revision surgery but you just have to live for today with this disease.

Your inner strength will get you through this.

Lots of love
Rebecca
